Optimal menu when agents make mistakes

چکیده
This paper studies how an optimal menu chosen by a social planner depends on whether agents receive imperfect signals about their true tastes (imperfect self-knowledge) or the properties of available alternatives information). Under self-knowledge, it is not to offer fewer than number different present in population, unless noise infinite (agents have no clue preferences). As increases, offers items that are closer together (more similar). However, under information, as could be construct with more distinct alternatives, restrict options, or, for some finite noise, single item.

Why markets make mistakes
Many models of markets are based on assumptions of rationality, transparency, efficiency, and homogeneity in various combinations. They assume, at least implicitly, that decision makers understand the structure of the market and how it produces the dynamics which can be observed or might potentially occur. Are these models acceptable simplifications, or can they be seriously misleading? The res...
متن کاملWhy Do Borrowers Make Mortgage Refinancing Mistakes?
Refinancing a mortgage is often one of the biggest and most important financial decisions that people make. Borrowers need to choose the interest rate differential at which to refinance and, when that differential is reached, they need to take the steps to refinance before rates change again. The optimal differential is where the interest saved by refinancing equals the sum of refinancing costs...

This paper analyses the optimal tax policy and public provision of private goods when individuals di¤er in two respects: income-earning ability and rationality. Publicly provided goods should be overprovided or subsidised, relative to the decentralised optimum, if societys marginal valuation of them exceeds the individual valuation and if these goods help relax the self-selection constraints, ...
متن کاملWhy Bubble-bursting Is Unpredictable: Welfare Effects of Anti-bubble Policy When Central Banks Make Mistakes
1 We would like to thank participants of Session 24B of the Southern Economic Association 75 th Annual Conference, 2005, for their invaluable comments on this paper's first draft. All mistakes are ours. ABSTRACT This paper examines the effect of bubble-bursting policy in the case where the central bank sometimes tries to deflate an asset which is not, in fact, overpriced. We consider the case o...
متن کاملMechanism Micues to Avoid: Common Mistakes Students Make When Writing Mechanisms
Throughout this course arrow pushing is used to indicate the flow of electrons in the various organic reaction mechanisms that are discussed. A few simple rules for properly performing arrow pushing were introduced in Section 6.2. In this Appendix we examine some of the most common mistakes that students make when first learning arrow-pushing methods and tell you how to avoid them. The mistakes...
